Other KVM devices support mounting ISO files as boot devices and sharing internal KVM storage as a USB device with the target. While Openterface devices do not have internal storage, they do support USB device sharing with the target and host machines, thus I ask the following: would it be possible to extend Openterface’s existing functionality to offer something similar? Additionally, would it be possible to share an ISO or folder from the host machine to the target via the USB connection in a similar way?

The KVM-GO has a built in SD Card reader.
I have a 128GB SD card in, which is flashed with Ventoy. I am able to boot and flash my servers, pc’s etc using this single device.
Not the same as the comet. But a workaround with the current hardware (you can switch between using the SD card on the host or the target with a click of a button).

None of the current hardware platforms have the ability to do this from a physical perspective. The SD card reader that @brelade_ mentioned is the only mass-storage capable target-facing thing in the design.
It would be possible to make something that plugs into the addon connector that enables this, but I am not aware of any projects like that as of yet.
It might be possible to make a really-low performance variant of this with the KM hardware, but that’s pretty far fetched.
I’d suggest looking at an iODD, rooted android with DriveDroid, or similar as a companion device.
